one. they grow up as the unwanted, abandoned once and never to be picked up again. sole photograph reminds them of the tall tales of their beginnings. countless possibilities that all end up in the same harsh reality that they are here now --that family is the pitter patter of tens of children running down the hardwood floors when the volunteers yell that it's time for supper.
two. years pass with time ticking and they grow up to be the ones too old for the system. records mark the attempts of redemption in his life but where his sister is not, he never goes. he feigns and acts of his rebellion, ill manners when his soul could barely harm a fly. she asks him why but he never tells. ( he doesn't know her own secrets begin then too. that his acts of kindness fester her with guilt like maggots in the heart. )
three. adolescence welcomes departures and he follows her footsteps into the real world. he is both too young and too old but he finds his footing with trial and error. his experiences and knowledge grow with each try of his hand at new occupation because school is all good and well for families that can afford delayed gratification but they have no blessing for such a gift.
four. he finds them then in his moments of transitions. where society fails him, he creates his own brotherhood – a family for the lacking, belonging to the ones with nothing. troubled youth shakes the ground with each step they take. loud, rambunctious, rebellious youth that seeks for their own freedom within their own terms, above the law and above societal norms. they crash, clatter, burn with every move, bolstered by their numbers and a connection that cannot be failed.
